The district Scripps Spelling Bee was held at Buchanan Hall on Eastern New Mexico University campus on February 4th, 2026. The top spellers from our county were in attendance to battle it out over bragging rights and the ability to try and attend the state level competition. The spellers did a great job but in the end the winner was Eleanor Shuler, a 7th grader at Portales Junior High School. Eleanor is an honors student and a long time winner at the various local and district spelling competitions. She took 6th place at the state spelling bee last year. She has the skills and determination to do just as well or better this year as she represents PMSD and Roosevelt County in the race for state champion.
